Tuesday, May 29, 2007 (Greenland, NH)—A group of Navy men visiting the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, painted walls and did spring cleanup of New Generation Shelter’s grounds during the United Way Spring Day of Caring last week, repainting the shelter entrances and doing landscaping projects. Lunch was donated by Flatbread Pizza of Portsmouth, with drinks and dessert made by shelter staff and residents. “The guys did a great job Tuesday,” said Jacqui O’Hearn, Daystaff. “They worked all day to finish a long list of shelter projects.” New Generation’s volunteer Dave Duggan of Rye coordinated the workers, assigning projects and providing tools and supplies. New Generation, Inc. is a shelter for homeless pregnant women and mothers with young children that teaches self-sufficiency to its residents. The shelter houses up to seven women and their children at a time, while teaching parenting education, job skills and life skills. Residents are driven to housing, health and social service appointments in the Continuum of Care, as well as work, job interviews and education classes. Other services include Next Generation Daycare and Preschool, and Second Generation Thrift Shoppes in Greenland and on Old Dover Road in Rochester. All proceeds help support New Generation Shelter operating costs. For further info, email fundraising@newgenerationinc.org, call 603-436-4989, or visit www.newgennh.com.
