For Immediate Release:
Donations Renew Transitional Apartment For Women and
Children in Need
Tuesday, April
19, 2005 (Greenland, NH)—New Generation Shelter’s transitional apartment has its
newest residents smiling thanks to volunteers from the Portsmouth Rotary-Sunrise
Club, and Phyllis & Janice Woods of Dover. Portsmouth Rotary-Sunrise Club
members and their friends volunteered to paint all five rooms of the two-bedroom
transitional apartment at New Generation. The Woods then donated $1800, the cost
for installation of new carpeting in the bedrooms and living room. The carpeting
was donated in memory of Phyllis’s late husband and Janice’s father, David
Woods, who passed away in 1996. David Woods had generously donated and installed
new flooring in 1987 when the historical residence was purchased and renovated
to serve women in crisis.
“We are grateful
for the financial help of the Woods family and the paint and labor of Portsmouth
Rotary-Sunrise Club members. Board members and staff were thrilled that the
painting and carpet replacement could be done so quickly,” said Toni Trotzer,
Executive Director. “The apartment looks great again, and is helping another
family in transition.” Rotary-Sunrise Club volunteers included Gen. Ken Clark,
Sean Fitzgerald, Larry Gormley, Cindy Boyd, Vanessa LaPointe, Nick LaPointe, and
Bonnie O’Keefe.
Single mothers
that are in between housing, jobs, or experiencing divorce, can rent the
transitional apartment for up to 18 months. The apartment has served 11 women
and 14 children since it opened in 1999. The space was part of a major addition
to New Generation Shelter that also included Next Generation Daycare, and
another office, through a significant anonymous donation supplemented by home
funds.
