Dear Friends, Please take a moment, to meet a young woman who has moved from despair to hope, to a permanent home. "In the last few years, my life was headed in the wrong direction. I got into trouble, lost my apartment and went to jail. I was alone, very pregnant, and living in a rehabilitation center. Once I had my baby, I would have nowhere to go. The Housing Partnership told my rehabilitation counselor to call New Generation. In October of 2006, I moved into New Generation, just two days after my son, Elijah, was born. I hadn’t been in a homeless shelter before, and I was surprised that the home was so nice and clean. I felt so welcome here. I was treated with respect, and I was at ease. The staff had a single room ready for me, gave me diapers and baby necessities, and a basinet for Elijah. I was so thankful that we both had a bed to sleep in. My mother is taking care of my first child, Kylee, who is now 3, and I visit them as often as possible. When I arrived, I was so grateful to be here, even though I was far away from everyone I knew. I think the rules and responsibilities are reasonable. The chores are divided among residents. I have learned to cook a lot of new meals; the daystaff has shown me new recipes. I found work close by. Before I got my car, the staff drove me to my housing and doctor’s appointments, to human services, and to my job. I started working about 30 hours a week, and I was able to put Elijah in childcare right on site. Next Generation staff has been so great for Elijah. I really trust them and they are all so amazing with the children. I met with Toni (Executive Director) and created goals to get housing, counseling, start working, and go to college. I got a car, and then I was more flexible with work. I started college classes this fall. I want to become a drug and alcohol counselor. This year I have taken a financial fitness course, and am a more self-sufficient adult, managing my time and money. I want a house and will soon have an IDA account to save for a down-payment. Once I have an Associates degree, I will get a Bachelor’s degree in Counseling. From being here, and taking action towards my goals, my self worth has increased. I feel like I am heading down the right path and will be able to provide for my children. A large part of the New Gen program is parenting education, about a mother and child’s health and safety. Every resident meets with Joan Ouellette who is a passionate teacher and cares about every girl who comes through here. I have made friends with some girls who have moved on and we keep in touch. New Gen has given me a permanent solution. My support system has grown here; I have two counselors, and I am closer with my family now. Other agencies have helped along the way too. Toni connects the residents to healthcare, housing, and counseling services. This week I am moving into my own apartment, close to work and school. Eventually, I will complete my degree, have Elijah and Kylee both living with me, and maintain my counseling and friendships with New Gen staff. I want to get closer to owning a house and having a career, while I continue to lead a clean, sober, successful life every day. It's not fun being homeless; this life is much better. I believe in second chances. New Gen gave me that opportunity to live an honest, healthy lifestyle with my children. This is a fulfilling life and I am so grateful for where I am today." - Alexis, 2007 resident The story you just read is true in every detail except for the names. When we, as a staff, ask ourselves the question whether or not we make a difference, we are heartened by the experience of Alexis and Elijah. This is not just a shelter. New Generation is a clean, comfortable home with a warm, nurturing atmosphere offering education, transportation, and asking for accountability from its residents. The structure and support we offer is a proven formula for success. Show your support for our program with a contribution and an investment in the residents and their children, who are our future. Have a blessed and joyous holiday season, as we celebrate love, peace, family, and community. Thank you for being there for our young families in need and for all the many ways you support us. Warmly, Toni Toni Trotzer
